Isaac talked me into letting him do some finger painting a few Saturdays ago. He insisted that Isabella join him and he was a very good instructor. We covered the table with a easily washable vinyl tablecloth (at least I know those are good for something), got out some old dot matrix printer paper, the finger paints, the finger paint accessories, and got messy!

Isabella is saying, "Cheesh!"

Why just stick with your fingers when you can stick your whole hand in the paint? It's much more fun!

The little artist is hard at work. And her shirt and face look clean compared to when we were done.

Isaac is here surveying his painting at the end.

He insisted that I put down the camera and join them. And who could resist a handsome boy like him? So, I tucked the camera in the bag far away from the paint and joined in the finger painting fun. It was certainly easier to just sit on the sidelines, take pictures, and survey from the outside looking in. No mess, but definately not as much fun. I've been thinking about that a lot lately, about how I tend to just watch my kids play and not join them. It's easier and sometimes necessary, but it isn't always the best choice for our family. I've been convicted that I need to be actively involved in their activities, even if it is just for a few minutes. So, I'm working on putting aside my tasks for a little while and actually playing with them- making pretend jasmine tea with sprinkles in the bath tub, putting 'jahmies' on baby and then wrapping baby up (again and again and again), giving dinosaur rides, tickling those cute little toes, and trying to think of new adventures for Isaac's coal ship where Pappy is the captain who is sailing to Newburyport. It's a challenge at times, but it's one that I think the rewards will last a lifetime.

I love the pictures you do capture when you have your camera on hand, but you are right about jumping in and getting in their world.
I too struggle at "playing" with my kids, and am often convicting. Ahoy Matey! It will be easier while you are here in Hawaii :).
Such adorable kids you have. This must be before your "non-toxic kid" ate the paint! Wow, what a good point you have. It's SO much easier to be a spectator. As they get older I'm realizing how much I've done that. As a homeschooler I am with my kids almost ALL the time, but I ask myself at times if I'm spending time WITH them or just in the same house. Thanks for sharing these thoughts!
Great shots of the kids! The baby is so big now!
